4 inspiring women who have overcome challenges to achieve success in sales

Women in sales have achieved great things over the past few decades. They have smashed down barriers and surpassed obstacles. Now, they are more common in executive and managerial positions and business ownership, which benefits the global market. They also inspire future female generations. They are aces in whatever field they choose.

Sales is no doubt a difficult business. Have you heard inspiring stories about women who overcame hardships to become successful sales leaders? 1. Joy Mangano is an American inventor, television personality, and entrepreneur.

Joy Mangano’s career began with many constraints. She was a young, single mother who lived with her parents, ex-husband and her father. Mangano’s first invention, the Miracle Mop, was created in 1990 when she became frustrated with traditional mops. The mop is made of plastic and can be dried quickly without soaking the user’s hands. The early assembly took place in 1991 in her father’s Peconic body shop.

Her original ads, done through her company, did not do well on QVC. But her unwavering attitude and her personal pitch helped her to push ahead. Her ad was successful and Miracle Mop sold 18,000 units in one day. Mangano recalls that her first sources were “people in the business around you” who could take advantage of your success if you are naive or weak enough.

Mangano then founded Ingenious Design, LLC, an organization dedicated to the design and sale of creative consumer products. She has launched many new products and innovations over the years including Huggable hangers, My Little Steamer and Forever Fragrant.

2. Madam C.J.Walker – Entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist of African American descent

C.J. Walker, one of the first self-made millionaires among women in the US is widely recognized. Walker is well-known. Madam C.J. Walker achieved success by creating and promoting a variety of haircare and cosmetic products specifically for black women. Walker was successful.

Madam C.J. Walker was raised by former slaves in Delta, Louisiana, in poverty and misery. After experiencing scalp and hair thinning problems, she developed her own hair care line. After developing “Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower”, a 1905 concoction that grew hair, she created conditioners and shampoos. Walker began a large marketing and sales campaign to promote and market her products. While touring the country, she also founded beauty schools and spoke to women about becoming sales agents. She gave black women the opportunity to become “Walker Agents” and earn money as a sales agent.

She used the word of mouth and did demos in churches across the country, and employed highly social local women to be sales representatives. Sarah worked with Booker T. Washington and other black leaders to place ads across the nation in every major black publication.

Walker were revolutionary at the time. Walker’s achievements were revolutionary for the time. She defied social expectations, and overcame racial and gender barriers to build a successful business empire. She made a significant contribution to the cause of economic independence for African Americans, education, and social change. Her impact therefore goes beyond entrepreneurship.

3. Brownie Wise – American salesman and entrepreneur who contributed greatly to Tupperware’s success

Brownie Wise, an American businesswoman and salesman who was instrumental in growing Tupperware – a leading direct sales firm – was responsible for the growth of the company. She is credited for creating and popularising Tupperware Party. This direct selling technique revolutionised the industry and became an international success.

Selling its products through traditional retail channels. Brownie wise came up with a brilliant idea to use passionate hosts to throw houseparties to promote Tupperware. She knew how to use social situations to promote Tupperware and its special features and benefits.

Tupperware sales grew under Wise as the Tupperware Party idea gained momentum. Independent sales consultants, often women, organized house parties for friends, relatives, and acquaintances to promote Tupperware. These gatherings were a social occasion, and Wise’s charismatic personality and strong sales skills helped to create a loyal fan base and propel Tupperware’s sales boom.

Brownie Wise, the first woman featured on the Business Week cover in 1954, was a testament to her success and the Tupperware Party concept. She played a key role in the development of incentive and recognition programs to reward and promote sales consultants and influenced Tupperware’s business culture.

4. Marry Barra – American Businesswoman who is the CEO at General Motors

Barra’s biggest obstacle as CEO was the ignition switch recall of 2014. Numerous deaths and accidents have been attributed by GM to key switches that malfunctioned. Barra was tasked with leading the company through the financial crisis, including multiple claims, investigations, and legal procedures. She began changing GM’s safety policies and ways of interacting with customers to address the problems and restore confidence.

Barra also stressed that it is important to cultivate good relationships with franchisees and create efficient distribution channels in order to reach the consumers. For sales to increase and client satisfaction to be maintained, it is important that dealerships are encouraged and that they work together.

Barra may not have a direct experience with revenue, but her position as CEO requires that she has a thorough understanding of what the sales department does to achieve the overall goals of the company. She works closely with her team and the management to set sales goals, analyze sales KPIs and make sure that the sales approach is in line with the company goals.

Mary Barra taught us a few important lessons.
